When women are interested in getting a breast augmentation, their most common question is: Will my breasts look natural after? Their greatest concern is whether or not the procedure will actually achieve a natural appearance rather than make it obvious they have implants. To ensure this, there are a few measures you can take prior to undergoing the surgery

The first step is enlisting an experienced surgeon. Conduct research prior to making a decision,  by reading Google reviews, reviewing before-and-after photos, and checking out his or her website and social media accounts. This should give you a sense of what to expect and how patients are treated. During your initial consultation, it’s important to ask about his or her education, training, and experience if not listed on their website. Follow this up with questions about performance, your procedure, preparation, and recovery.

In addition to such inquiries, you’ll want to take several measures during the consultation to ensure natural-looking results. Make it clear this is the aesthetic you’re looking for. A board-certified plastic surgeon will explain the various types and sizes of implants. He or she will help you choose from round or gummy bear shapes, saline or silicone compositions, textured or smooth surfaces, and low, moderate or high profiles.

Typically, the most natural-appearing implants are smooth, silicone, gummy bear in consistency , and low or moderate in profile. Smooth implants are soft and move freely around the breast pocket. When filled with silicone, they feel gelatinous, similar to a natural breast. Although a round implant can appear natural, the teardrop has grown in popularity because of its greater projection at the bottom and tapering at the top. A low profile is best for women with wider chests, offering minimal projection. High profile implants are ideal for women with smaller chests.

Every patient is different, and an expert surgeon will take your height, weight, and body frame into account. He or she will also have you hold and feel the implants, so you can decide which is right for you.

Discuss the implants’ placement with your surgeon before the end of your consultation, because the distance between them can change their overall appearance. Those spaced too far apart often look abnormal. An experienced surgeon will know how to create the appropriate space between your breasts based on your frame. Chat about vertical placement, too. You don’t want your implants to sit too high or low, so they look fuller on the top or bottom. The final placement option you’ll discuss with your surgeon is whether you want the implants below or above the muscle. Submuscular positioning ensures the body’s contours cover the implant, leading to a more natural appearance. However, depending on the patient’s chest muscle tissues, placing the implants above the muscle may yield better results.

After your consultation, it’s important to properly prepare, and follow your surgeon’s recovery instructions. This creates the optimal conditions to achieve your desired outcome.
